Australia is one lucky country to be the only home of the wombats on this planet. Simply put, they’re endemic to the continent. Since their closest living relatives are koalas, it makes sense that wombats hit the sack a lot, too—catching z’s for about 16 hours daily. They are also marsupials, giving birth to tiny, undeveloped joeys that crawl into their mom’s belly pouch. And how can we forget to share that the cute Australian wombat is a nocturnal herbivore that has cube-shaped poo!
Sadly, wombats were often killed in the past, either for food or because they were seen as vermin by pastoralists. All species have now at least been protected throughout Australia, except in Victoria. Bare-nosed wombats are still viewed as agricultural pests there, though permits are mandatory to controlling their population. One more reason to adore the cute Australian wombat is that a group of it is called wisdom of wombats.
